Home Health Aide

ABE and ESL students: Exciting New Career Opportunity!
The need for home care is increasing! This exciting new career opportunity is offered to students who are assessed at intermediate and advanced educational functioning levels and who are interested in becoming a health care professional.

➠ Learn the basic skills needed to be a Home Care Aide.
➠ Be employed by an agency that provides Home Health Care Aides to families.
➠ Work in an Adult Day Care Center or Assisted Living Facility.
➠ Be employed as a private duty Home Health Care Aide.
➠ Build a foundation for further training as a Nursing Assistant or Certified Nurse Aide (CNA).

Eligibility

Students must be 20 years or older as of September 1 and not currently enrolled in a High School. Students must be assessed at intermediate or advanced education levels.  Levels are determined by testing at the time of registration.

Fee 

There will be a $30.00 non-refundable registration and assessment fee due at the time of registration. Uniforms can be purchased locally for approximately $20.00. All tuition and class fees are due at time of registration. If necessary, payment plans are available but must be paid in full by by the end of the first 8 week module.

Refund Policy

Tuition will be refunded (minus a $25 processing fee) if a written request, including a valid reason for dropping the class, is submitted to the Adult Education Office prior to the completion of the 3rd day of attendance.

Medical Assistant – Clerical*

Medical Assistant Clerical This one semester course prepares students for a position as an entry level medical office receptionist, hospital unit clerk, or inpatient & outpatient receptionist. Course work focuses on filing, appointment scheduling, office communications, office billing, medical coding, medical insurance billing, and accounts payable & receivable. The class also includes medical terminology, basic anatomy & physiology, and how to schedule necessary tests at a hospital, lab, or x-ray clinic. A Certificate of completion is awarded to each passing student at the end of the semester. Additionally, a 160 hour externship is highly recommended as part of this course and is completed at
each student’s initiative. A separate certificate is awarded for completion of the externship.

Medical Assistant – Clinical*

Medical Assistant Clinical This one semester course focuses on a combination of theory with “hands-on” practice in a classroom and laboratory. Students are prepared to work in a doctor’s office, medical clinic or hospital setting. The class also includes medical terminology, basic anatomy & physiology. Students learn medical & surgical asepsis, infection control, vital signs, E.K.G.’s and basic interpretation. Students are also taught injections and venipuncture according to OSHA standards. A Certificate of Completion is awarded to each passing student at the end of the semester. Additionally, a 160 hour externship is highly recommended as part of this course and is completed at each student’s initiative. A separate certificate is awarded for completion of the externship.

Registered Medical Assistant

Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) With successful completion of both M.A. Clinical and M.A. Clerical requirements, the student is eligible to apply for certification as a Registered Medical Assistant with American Medical Technologists.

Certified Nursing Assistant

This eleven week program prepares students for entry-level positions in nursing homes, hospitals, hospice, private duty, and home health care agencies. Basic patient care skills are the focus of this program. A one-week DAY-TIME clinical experience for 5.5 hours per day at the end of the program in a nursing home accompanied by a State Certified R.N. is a requirement for this course. After successful completion of this course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion and qualify to test for a two year renewable Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate from the State of Michigan.

Patient Care Technician

The Patient Care Technician Certificate is awarded to those who have successfully completed the requirements of both the Medical Assistant/ Clinical and the Certified Nursing Assistant programs.

Dental Assistant

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dental assistants is expected to grow by 31 percent from 2010 to 2020 – much faster than the average for all occupations!

Dental Assistant is an 18 week program that is competency based and focused on training students to work as a member of a dental health team. The curriculum includes classroom instruction in the concepts of dental health and hands-on experience in chair-side assisting. Students will learn dental terminology and anatomy, preventive dentistry and nutrition, four and six-handed dentistry, dental specialties, dental radiology, dental charting system, and laboratory procedures. This course will include a hands-on internship for clinical experience in the dental office and CPR certification. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the dental assistant program, students will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Schedule
The class meets Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 PM.
It begins Monday,February 1st and ends Thursday, June 12, 2016.
